The Real Girl Code

An all-girls hackathon aimed at middle school and high school students happening on May 5th at the Jonah Group office in Toronto.

The Issue

Why is The Real Girl Code important?

Technology jobs are among the fastest growing in the world. They are predicted to grow by 15 to 20 percent between 2012 and 2022, which is more than any other industry. However, not enough girls are filling these jobs.

            -        Women earn only 28 percent of computer sceince degrees.

            -        Fewer than one in five women hold technology jobs.
            -        After peaking in 1991 at 36 percent, the rate of women in computing roles has been                       in a steady decline. Today, it’s only 24 percent. If we don’t act now, this number will                       diminish to virtually nothing.

The gender inequality issue in computer science and other STEM-related fields is evidently caused by a disconnect between the industry and the message girls receive about their ability to succeed.
We need to make a change and now is the time to do it. The Real Girl Code aims to kickstart this cultural shift in Toronto.

About

What is The Real Girl Code?

We're an all-girls hackathon aimed at middle school and high school students located in Toronto happening in Spring 2018.

The Real Girl Code aims to provide opportunities for girls across the Greater Toronto Area to explore or deepen their understanding in computer science by cultivating a supportive community. We strongly believe that the first step for girls to feel truly confident is to break gender stereotypes by creating an environment where no girl has to fit into any gender role and can be or do anything she can possibly dream of.

FAQs

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is best described as an “invention marathon”. Anyone who has an interest in technology attends a hackathon to learn, build and share their creations over the course of a weekend in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. You don’t have to be a programmer and you certainly don’t have to be majoring in Computer Science.

Who can participate?
